			<title>INTRODUCTION</title>
<p>The Atlantic forest biome is considered one of the most important hot-spots of the world (Myers &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0063">2000</xref>), with a high diversity and richness of endemic species; however, both the increasing deforestation and the intense fragmentation have threatened its biodiversity (MMA, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0064">2007</xref>). Originally, the total covering of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil was about 150 million ha, and today Ribeiro &#x0026; al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0068">2009</xref>) suggest a remainder of 15,719,337 ha. The State of Minas Gerais is the fourth largest territory in Brazil (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="F0001">Fig.1</xref>), with 586,519.727 km2 (IBGE, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0052">2015</xref>) where currently 3.199.378 ha are covered by Atlantic Forest (SOS Mata Atl&#x00E2;ntica &#x0026; INPE, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0076">2013</xref>). The Atlantic Forest remainders are extremely important reservoirs for biodiversity (Lombardi &#x0026; Gon&#x00E7;alves, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0061">2000</xref>), as yet without any inventory study on gasteroid Basidiomycota. Only two sporadic studies have been carried out for the state of Minas Gerais, from where 3 species of Geastrum Pers. were reported by Sydow &#x0026; Sydow (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0085">1907</xref>): Geastrum englerianum Henn., Geastrum rickii Lloyd, and Geastrum velutinum Morgan and one more, recently recorded, Geastrum javanicum L&#x00E9;v. (Trierveiler-Pereira &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0087">2011</xref>).</p>

<p>The fungi commonly known as &#x201C;earthstars&#x201D; correspond to the family Geastraceae Corda, which is characterized by its star form and a single apical hole bordered by a structure called peristome (Ponce de Leon, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0066">1968</xref>; Sunhede, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0084">1989</xref>). Geastrum is its most representative genus, has a cosmopolitan distribution and is adapted to different habitats (Calonge &#x0026; Mata, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0024">2004</xref>; Zamora &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0090">2013</xref>; Sousa &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0079">2014a</xref>). For a long time, various authors considered this genus in Lycoperdales Clem. (Cunningham, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0037">1944</xref>; Bottomley, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0019">1948</xref>; Pegler &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0065">1995</xref>; Calonge, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0022">1998</xref>). Later, Hosaka &#x0026; al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0051">2006</xref>), by means of molecular studies, showed the close relationship between the earthstars and the members of a &#x201C;gomphoid-phalloid clade&#x201D; and proposed the order Geastrales Hosaka &#x0026; Castellano. In the last 12 years, this genus has been widely studied in the northeastern Brazil (Baseia &#x0026; Milanez, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0014">2002</xref>; Baseia &#x0026; Calonge, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0011">2006</xref>; Fazolino &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0045">2008</xref>; Silva &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0072">2013</xref>; Cabral &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0020">2014a</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2014b</xref>; Sousa &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0079">2014a</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0081">c</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0082">d</xref>), although there is a lack of information about it for the southeastern regions, specially for Minas Gerais.</p>
			<p>The puffballs are characterized by their globose to pyriform fruiting bodies, in which the basidiospores remain protected inside by a powdery gleba until maturation (Cunningham, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0037">1944</xref>; Bottomley, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0019">1948</xref>). They are represented by the genera Arachnion Schwein, Bovista Pers., Calvatia Fr., Disciseda Czern, Gastropila Homrich &#x0026; J.E. Wright, Langermania Rostk, Lycoperdon Pers., and Morganella Zeller (Pegler &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0065">1995</xref>; Calonge, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0022">1998</xref>; Baseia &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0015">2014</xref>). Traditionally, the puffballs have been included into the family Lycoperdaceae Chevall., but after molecular analyses &#x2014;nu-rDNA&#x2014; (Hibbett &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0049">1997</xref>), they have been transferred to Agaricaceae Chevall. Until the XXth century, these fungi were poorly studied in Brazil (Hennings, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0047">1904a</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0048">b</xref>; Silveira, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0074">1943</xref>; Rick, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0069">1961</xref>; Homrich, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0050">1975</xref>; Bononi &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0018">1981</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0017">1984</xref>), but in the last two decades this scenario has changed with the addition of new records (Baseia, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0008">2003</xref>; Baseia, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0009">2005a</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0010">b</xref>; Wartchow &#x0026; Silva, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0089">2007</xref>; Cortez &#x0026; Alves, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0030">2012</xref>; Cortez &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0034">2012</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0035">2013</xref>; Alves &#x0026; Cortez, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0007">2014</xref>; Baseia &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0015">2014</xref>) and new taxa (Cortez &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0036">2007</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0033">2011</xref>; Baseia &#x0026; Calonge, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0012">2008</xref>; Su&#x00E1;rez &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0083">2009</xref>; Alfredo &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0003">2012</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0004">2014a</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0005">b</xref>; Alves &#x0026; Cortez, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0006">2013</xref>; Alfredo &#x0026; Baseia, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0002">2014</xref>).</p>
<p>Thus the goal of this study was to increase the knowledge of gasteroid fungi in Atlantic Forest biome, by means of new expeditions aimed to collect specimens belonging to this group. The study of this material has yielded new records for the species of earthstars and puffballs of Minas Gerais, as well as an important information input which is presented in this paper.</p>

			<title>MATERIAL AND METHODS</title>
<p>39 samples were collected during the rainy season of the years 2012 and 2013 from the Municipal Biological Reserve of Santa Rita M&#x00ED;tzi Brand&#x00E3;o (Reserva Biol&#x00F3;gica Municipal de Santa Rita Mitzi Brand&#x00E3;o), in Minas Gerais (Brazil; <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F0001">Fig. 1</xref>). According to Eduardo &#x0026; Passamani (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0044">2009</xref>), this area is located at coordinates 22&#x00B0;12&#x2019;17&#x201D; S 45&#x00B0;44&#x2019;19&#x201D; W, and its vegetation ranges from low tropical montane broadleaf forests to ombrophilous and seasonal semi-deciduous forests, completely inside of Atlantic Forest biome domain, with annual rainfalls averaging 1500 mm. The collection method is based on Silva &#x0026; al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0073">2014</xref>). The specimens were photographed in situ. The morphological characters were analyzed on dry basidiomata, according to Soto &#x0026; Wright (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0078">2000</xref>), Leite &#x0026; al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0058">2007a</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0059">b</xref>), and Sousa &#x0026; al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0079">2014a</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0080">b</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0081">c</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0082">d</xref>) for earthstars, and to Demoulin (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0040">1976</xref>), Calonge (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0022">1998</xref>), Alfredo &#x0026; Baseia (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0002">2014</xref>), and Alfredo &#x0026; al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0004">2014a</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0005">b</xref>) for puffballs. The size of earthstar basidiomata were taken from horizontally mounted exoperidia, and the height of the basidiomata includes peristome. For microscopic analysis, free-hand cuts were made in exoperidium sections, separating mycelial, fribrous, and pseudoparenquimatous layers. Blades for microscopic analysis were mounted in 5% KOH, in cotton blue to evaluate if the hyphae were cyanophilic (Cb+) or not (Cb-), and in Melzer&#x2019;s reagent to detect if there was dextrinoid (Melz+) or not (Melz-). For each specimen, 20 basidiospores were randomly selected for measures. The mean of height/width quotient (Qm) was also calculated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) photographies were made according to Cortez &#x0026; al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0031">2008a</xref>). Color descriptions were based on K&#x00FC;ppers (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0055">2002</xref>). All specimens were deposited at the herbarium of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN, Brazil).</p>

				<p>Distribution.&#x2014;This is the first record from Minas Gerais. In Brazil, Geastrum fimbriatum has been reported from: Bahia (Trierveiler-Pereira &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0086">2009</xref>), Para&#x00ED;ba (Trierveiler-Pereira &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0087">2011</xref>), Par&#x00E1; (Leite &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0060">2011</xref>; Trierveiler-Pereira &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0087">2011</xref>), Pernambuco (Leite &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0058">2007a</xref>; Trierveiler-Pereira &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0087">2011</xref>), Rio de Janeiro (Berkeley &#x0026; Cooke, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0016">1876</xref>; Hennings, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0048">1904b</xref>; Saccardo, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0071">1888</xref>), Rio Grande do Norte (Sousa &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0081">2014c</xref>), and Rio Grande do Sul (Rick, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0069">1961</xref>; Lazarotto &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0056">2014</xref>).</p>
<p>Observations.&#x2014;This species is recognized by its saccate to arched, non-hygroscopic exoperidium, mycelial layer strongly encrusted with soil particles and leaf litter fragments and a fibrillose and non-delimited peristome (Sunhede, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0084">1989</xref>). It is similar to G. rufescens, differing by its arched fruiting body, pseudoparenchymatous layer with ridges (rimose), pedicellate, and with apophysis endoperidium, and larger basidiospores up to 6 &#x00B5;m (Sunhede, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0084">1989</xref>). Some specimens of G. fimbriatum have a collar in the pseudoparenchymatous layer, as G. triplex, however, these species can be distinguished by the size of the basidiomata, larger in G. triplex &#x2014;up to 150 mm&#x2014;, and a distinctively delimited peristome (Sousa &#x0026; al., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0081">2014c</xref>). The size of spores appears to be variable: Leite &#x0026; al.
